Get up close to the death of an NFL stadium — The destruction of the Metrodome in 25 pictures

The Minnesota Vikings will spend the next 2 years playing at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium while their new stadium is being built. Even while the NFL’s newest stadium is being constructed, the place the Vikings called home for 31 years is still being torn down.

These photos show the death of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, the only place to host the World Series, MLB All-Star Game, NCAA basketball’s Final Four, and a Super Bowl.

First, there was the groundbreaking ceremony, which took place December 3, 2013, with 2 games still left to be played at the adjacent Metrodome…

The new state-of-the-art stadium will have a roof and will host football games, but that’s just about the only similarity between the new age structure and the utilitarian, concrete bunker it’s replacing…

  1. “Remaining remnants” seems a little repetitively redundant ;)My favorite memory in the Dome was attending Games 3 & 4 of the 2002 ALDS. But given how nice Target Field is and how good the new Vikings’ stadium looks like it will be, I don’t think the HHH will be missed for that long.

  2. I bet you those silly office workers with the shovels of dirt wouldn’t be smiling as much if they actually had to do that more than once…
